Rubbing plates have fallen somewhat out of fashion these days, although they are still very popular both in the classroom and at home, where many parents have found that they can keep their youngsters involved for hours.  In the classroom, many teachers find that they are among the best and most affordable arts and crafts supplies out there. Once you begin to use rubbing plates in your class your students will get excited. Since they are something that some students don’t know anything about, it will be a new experience.  They will want to learn more and will really get into the project.

So, what is a rubbing plate?  It is simply a piece of plastic or wood that has a raised picture on it.  When a person puts a piece of paper on top of the plate and then rubs the paper with the side of a pencil , a crayon, or a pastel, the picture is transferred from the plate onto the piece of paper. 

Today it is easy to find a variety of rubbing plates with different themes.  With the right combination you can create optical illusions or detailed pictures that will really captivate your student’s minds. And that is what you are trying to do, right? So when you and your students use rubbing plates, you should try to combine a variety of designs and colors to make different patterns. With the right combination even fairly young students can create some very intricate pictures.  For many, this can be a very nice introduction to drawing.

In addition to using rubbing plates to transfer a picture to a piece of paper, you can continue the project and use chalks, pencils, and crayons to decorate them. This is when the real fun starts as your students will love this part of the project.

As you begin to shop for rubbing plates you will find that they are quite affordable. For example, you should be able to purchase a package of them for under $10.00. Since there are usually around six in a package, you can see that this is a very inexpensive classroom supply.  At that price, you can put together a very nice selection of rubbing plates for not very much money.  And since they are reusable, this is an investment in teaching supplies that will stay with you for years.
