From young students to those in high school, pastels can be a lot of fun to use. They come in the form of sticks and contain a powdered pigment along with a binder. However, these details should not matter to you and your students. What is important is that you know how pastels can be used, and of course, that you give your children a chance to get involved with this art supply from time to time.

As you begin to shop for pastels you will find that they come in a variety of colors. To make things simple on you and your classroom, purchase a few sticks for each color. This way you know for sure that all your students have what they need in order to complete their project to specifications.

Also, there are many different pastel products to choose from. Do not automatically assume that they are all the same. The most popular pastels include: soft pastels, hard pastels, pastel pencils, oil pastels, and water soluble pastels. Which ones are right for your upcoming project?

Did you know that pastels can produce a lot of dust? This is something to be aware of for two reasons. Once, the use of pastels can be very messy – especially with young students. Secondly, it is not healthy to breathe in this dust. For this reason, you have to take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of your students.
