Eighteen
local fourth- and fifth-graders competing in the elementary division
of the county science fair on Feb. 9 scored high enough to compete
in the Coastal Georgia Regional Science and Engineering Fair at
Coastal Georgia Community College in Brunswick Feb. 22-25.
The students were Kayla Williams, Ben Santiago, Brianna Dowling,
Nigel Cobb, Josh Witt, Sean Howell, Matthew McKinney, Kalia Monlyn,
Halee Brady, Jenny Strozinsky, Elyse Gowen, Jake Manning, Jordan
Baker, Michaela Young, Charlotte Crampton, Bradley Carter, Christian
Martinez and Trevor Martin
Also, in the kindergarten to third-grade competition, the winners
were
· First place — Mikahla Osytoyic, Kingsland Elementary.
· Second place — Lana Nutt’s class, Crooked
River Elementary; Third-place — Hope Stark’s class,
David L. Rainer Elementary.
The science fair was held at David L. Rainer Elementary and sponsored
by Lockheed-Martin Missiles and Space. The contest judges were engineers
from that company.
School leaders say that the students’ projects showed a great
deal of insight and careful research.
“Based on standardized test scores and the implementation
of the new Georgia Performance Standards, our system-wide science
committee has recommended that all fourth-graders and middle grades
students participate in school science fairs,” said Dr. Angela
McManigal, who helped coordinate the science fair. “We provided
more professional learning for teachers to integrate science projects
in all subject areas of study. The outcome was that the science
projects from Camden County were the best that I have seen in the
four years that I have led this committee.”
Camden students from elementary, middle and high school levels
entered a total of 44 projects to the region-level science fair.
Other counties that competed at region were Glynn, McIntosh, Brantley
and Pierce.
The Camden district-level winners were:
· Sean Howell, David L. Rainer Elementary — Fourth-Grade
Award of Promise.
· Bradley Carter, Mamie Lou Gross Elementary — Fifth-Grade
Award of Promise.
· Charlotte Crampton, Kingsland Elementary — Fifth-Grade
Award of Promise; Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge Nominee.
· Josh Witt, Matilda Harris Elementary — First-Place
Overall for Fourth Grade.
· Miranda Braun, St. Marys Middle — First-Place Behavioral
and Social Science Category/State Science Fair Representative.
· Kelli Diaz, St. Marys Middle — First-Place Mathematics
Category/State Science Fair Representative.
· Danny Rawl, Camden Middle — Herbert Hoover Presidential
Library Association Young Engineer Award; Discovery Channel Young
Scientist Challenge Nominee; National Society of Professional Engineers
Award; U.S. Air Force Award of Engineering; Physical Science Category
Runner-Up; State Science Fair Representative.
· Valerie Swanson, St. Marys Middle — State Science
Fair Alternate
Danny Rawl broke all previously held Camden records for winning
awards at the district level. His project was on the aerodynamics
of different shapes. Rawl is an eighth-grader in gifted education
who loves science and is also a member of the school band.
“I like science a lot,” said Rawl after he swept the
awards ceremony. “Engineering is something I like a lot but
I really want to become a vet someday. I really enjoyed doing the
experiments for my project. That was neat. I guess I feel the best
about the Discovery Channel Award. It was fun.”
Braun, Diaz and Rawl will now go on to compete at the state level,
with Swanson standing ready as an alternate. They will spend the
week of April 5-8 in Athens and attend the Georgia Science and Engineering
Fair, which will be hosted at the University of Georgia.
