Manipulatives are more than visual aids for the classroom. They are interactive materials designed to help the children understand more deeply the lessons being taught. For example: a manipulative for learning how to count and simple addition and subtraction would be a manipulative such as hands-on counter with a stand and wooden blocks or spheres for the children to move.

Let us say a child is asked to move five blocks to the left side of the manipulative object, ok now take away two of the blocks. Now, ask the child how many blocks are left when two are subtracted from five.
