Sometimes
it is hard to come up with ideas for valentine
themed activities that are unique, as well as suitable
for older students, too. Of course you have the wonderful—all
purpose serving doilies you can use for your valentine themed activities
and the standard other art supplies like pink, red and white construction
paper etc. These can be useful for the younger classes. They, or
you, the instructor can cut hearts out of the paper and doilies
and paste them together. Then maybe color them with non-toxic crayons,
markers or paint pens and hang them up on the wall.
As I mentioned, the holiday can be a great excuse to give the children
a little break from all of their hard work and be creative. Remember,
such valentine themed activities are not unproductive, they do not
put the students minds to rest—but they shift their thought
processes to the creative side of the brain—to give it a bit
of a chance to work too.
· Valentine boxes
For this valentine themed activity you will need:
—plain boxes (shoe boxes if you can or if children can bring
them in. Otherwise, plain boxes that are square shaped—treasure-chest
shaped or even heart shaped should be available at your local craft
store.)
—glue sticks
—regular glue
—a glue gun
—colored paper (red, pink and white)
—rhinestones
—glitter
—puffy paints or paint pens
—scissors
—drop cloth or table cover
This is one of the best valentine themed activities there are—it
works for many different age groups.
Let the valentine themed activity begin: first, let children cover
their own boxes. Using the colored paper, the students can cover
the sides and the tops of their boxes. Then for the valentine themed
activity, let the students decorate their own boxes however they
want to with the materials provided. They can use the rhinestones
(best applied with the glue gun), they can use glitter pains or
glue a part of the box and sprinkle glitter on it. They can cut
out hearts or other shapes an glue them onto the boxes.
And last but not least, if you want to, this valentine themed activity
can be a combination of two valentine themed activities by having
the students cut a slit in the top of their boxes big enough to
drop a valentine card into. Then the students would write their
names on their boxes.
Thus, the second of the valentine themed activities will be to have
the students make valentines for each other and drop them in the
boxes. As the teacher you may want to throw in some candy or a card
as well. Then on the end of the day on Valentines Day—when
the children go home they can open their boxes and see what is inside.
· Valentine hats:
Another valentine themed activity that takes very little time and
effort is to make valentine hats. This is one of my favorite valentine
themed activities to do. You can use any of the items listed above
for the Valentine boxes, or you can simply use pink, red and white
construction paper—and a stapler or some glue. To start out,
cut the construction paper so that there is a wide strip to go around
the head at the bottom of the hat, and fit it to the students head.
Then glue or staple the strip so it will rest on the students heads.
Now here comes the fun part of this valentine themed activity. Have
the students cut out shapes like hearts or squares etc. and decorate
them with markers or crayons or even some of the materials listed
above. Then the students will glue what they have made onto the
valentine themed hats and have them to wear and take home with them
after school.
