Teachers
who have not been trained to instruct classes using digital equipment
are the victims here. The digital divide is slowly being closed
because new training for teachers do include digital training. However,
the te-achers who have practiced before and even long before the
development of this new technology will experience the digital divide—despite
the fact that these people may be wonderful teachers, the digital
divide may even take their jobs.
There is also the digital divide between older students who are not as experienced in digital technology. The younger students will have the advantage over them when they progress to higher grades. Therefore, students who want to especially succeed after high school may have to make extra efforts to learn what they missed when they were younger and technology and the digital divide were not a concern for both public and private schools.
There are a lot of children out there who want desperately to succeed they focus all their time on school and learning.
For example:
Our future doctors, lawyers, veterinarians, professors etc. are hard working and very active in extra curricular programs. But if they want to keep up, if they want a chance to make their dreams realities, they have to learn detailed kinds of technology, just to narrow the digital divide. This is unfair to straight A, and AP level students who have to quit the theatre or German club, or the debate team in order to catch themselves up.
Of course, all of these problems will dissolve if technology is included in every school as well as in the training of new teachers. But for now, the digital divide is a very real concern.
Many schools are beginning to offer night and Saturday classes for teachers to try and catch-up with the times. The problem is that teachers get paid very little for the large amount of work they already do. And in training programs such as these teachers are not offered extra pay for their free time.
