Technology in the Classroom

Technology in the ClassroomDo schools have the funding to put computers in the classroom? If not, how can the latest technology be taught?
Some ideas to get around the funding problem related to this concept are:

• If each class is really striving for technology in the classroom, by keeping computers in the classroom, it may be necessary have a smaller number of computers than students. Keep the computers in the classroom in their own section away from the regular desks. The students can take turns using them. Some can work on their computer skills, while others work on other assignments and wait their turns. One problem with this idea is that there may not be enough room to set up ten computers in the back of the classroom—especially if you already have many students in the class.

• If you want to find other ways to teach technology in the classroom, you can refer to updated technological publications—studying the new types of technology that are being created. You can also take a look at new technology in the classroom and discuss the scientific strides that this new technology means.

• When I was growing up, even though technology was nowhere near the place it has come to be today—we still worked on computers in school on a regular basis. These computers were located in rooms (or a room) of their own called computer lab(s), and every class had a set time for computer lab. These classes were taught by one teacher for every group—a teacher who had expertise in computers and technology that the other teachers did not. If a school simply does not have the budget to put computers in every classroom, (and few do) they might consider computer labs as an alternative.

• Strides in scientific technology can be the focus of many lessons. Technology in the classroom does not require the use of computers. Lessons on technology can be explanations of new scientific data, new strides in the space program and how they are possible based on new technology. To bring technology to the classroom. May not be as costly as one would expect at first. Teach as much as you can with what you have.

Other than the ideas above, there are not many options for getting more computers in the classroom. If each school could afford to provide tiny laptop computers or other technological equipment for each student to study, I am sure these things would be priority items for schools to obtain. But such technology is expensive—not to mention that such technology is updated so often that class computers would have to be replaced every few years at least.

The best and least expensive of all these ideas, if schools want their students to learn computer skills and have a limited budget is to have a computer laboratory, maybe even two, where the students can work on computer skills and learn to do research on the Internet (as well as in the school library) and how to use other types of software that is practical and common in the new, technologically advanced world we now live in—like it or not.

But teaching technology in the classroom is possible even without computers. It may actually be more effective, as technology grows to use for your lesson plans the most updated information provided by technological publications, such as articles and explanations of how the latest technology works, from buying the most current science text books—and to use visual aids as often as possible.
