Teaching health to elementary students

Teaching health to elementary studentsSince some of the scientific factors are too hard to grasp for the youngest age groups, here are a few ideas that will use visual aids in the classroom to help the students understand health, the different types of health they need to think about and how to stay healthy:

· The “eeeew” affect
In teaching health to elementary students, many of your students will not understand that they will be affected by certain habits of poor hygiene in the long run instead of right away. It is very effective to use visual aids when teaching health to elementary students. Show them can happen when personal hygiene is ignored over time.

  • Smoking
If you are teaching health to elementary students, one of the best lessons you can possibly teach your students is never to start smoking. Show them pictures of healthy lungs—and then show them pictures of the lungs of a long-time smoker. Also let them know that many people who want to quit smoking have tried several times and keep failing at it. They can not just do it for a little while and then simply quit.
  • Dental hygiene
Teaching health to elementary students includes teaching dental hygiene. To achieve the “eeeew” affect here simply show the students pictures of people with very bad teeth. Explain in simple terms how much it hurts to fix a cavity—and encourage them to brush and floss every day.
  • Bathing and/or showering
If you can, try to bring in a piece of cloth or clothing that stinks of body odor. You will most likely get an “eeeew” out of them this way. Tell them that dirt and sweat build up on the skin and make them stinky. But not only will it make them stinky not to shower or bathe, it may cause them to get sick. Explain that bacteria or “bad germs” will grow if we do not wash them off.
  • Eating right
In teaching health to elementary students it is important to emphasize healthy eating habits. Now more then ever, with a growing problem among elementary students of obesity and the poor health that relates to it, you need to explain this one very carefully. Eating right is one of those things that will not always affect you right away. Show the students photos of obese children and adults. Explain that the obese adults have most likely developed diabetes—explain that when you have diabetes you have to take shots every day. And you can even develop diabetes as a child. Also show them pictures of healthy people, running, walking, swimming etc. and explain to your students that without eating healthy—these people would not be able to exercise or even play games like ‘tag’ or ‘hide and seek’, because these people are too weak form their bad eating habits.

Teaching health to elementary students is a task to be well thought through. The more they know the better, healthier, and happier they will be in life.
