Teaching
foreign languages to in schools is very important,
and here are just a few reasons as to why:
Communication is one of the most important things that students
learn throughout their schooling. While still in just preschool
and kindergarten, children are encouraged to communicate their thoughts
and feeling. They are taught what it means to be happy or sad and
how to ask for politely for things and how to share. Everyday, kindergarten
and preschool students are adding new words to their growing vocabularies.
As students get older, they are taught how to write. Writing is
a very important tool of education. First students are taught the
letters, then how to spell small words and then bigger words. Then
students are taught how to make sentences, paragraphs, papers, essays
on the History of the Civil War. Student are asked to write papers
and give presentations, have debates and class discussion. All of
these things are steps towards better communication.
Teaching foreign languages is a very important step towards communication
for more reason than one. By learning a foreign language, students
will learn more about their own language – the roots of words,
grammar, etc. Also, teaching foreign languages to students gives
students a chance to communicate with people from other cultures.
It is important that students know that English is not the only
language in the world, that Americans do not possess the only culture.
Students should not be taught to think that they do not need to
learn a foreign language because everyone speaks English anyhow.
First of all, not everyone speaks English. Second of all, people
appreciate it if you can speak with them in their native tongue.
And third of all, there are many more reasons for teaching foreign
languages in schools than simply the fact that students will know
more than one language.
Teaching foreign languages and learning foreign languages use parts
of the brain that simply teaching and learning about history and
math, etc. do not use. Teaching foreign languages makes students
think in new ways and learn a new way of looking at the surrounding
world. Anything that offers students a chance to see the world differently
is a great tool.
Teaching foreign languages is a fairly standard option in secondary
education, but it ought to be mandatory (or at least more widely
available) to students who are much younger. Why? It is much easier
to learn a language when you are young. Why not teach foreign languages
to students as they are learning their native language? They will
pick it up much faster, and in the future, they will be able to
pick up other languages faster, as well.
Teaching foreign languages in schools (especially elementary schools)
is so incredibly important. This essay hardly does the importance
of this topic any justice. Just pay it heed anyhow, and start teaching
foreign languages!
