Teaching American history· Colonial America
Certain characteristics define what we commonly refer to as colonial America. -
The American was a “new man” acting on new principles, entertaining new ideas, and forming new opinions.

After explaining to your students where the desire for immigration came from—considering that the boat ride to America was arduous and could even be fatal. Have the children suggest some explanations as to why the settlers sought this new land.

Although the theme of colonial society is rather broad, the main reasons behind colonization and settlement were the political, religious, and social institutions emerged in the English colonies.

· Teaching colonial American history to older students:
is important because not many of the students understand how it all really happened. Most early history lessons leave out slavery and the massacre of the natives of this land and instead focus on the desire for freedom from the forced religion of England.

The older your students are, when teaching American history the more maturely they will be able to digest the information above. Americans were not always perfect and America is a wonderful county but it will never be perfect. To introduce in the classroom some of the more truthful details of our country’s development will be interesting to them and will also give them the feeling that they are being treated with honesty and respect.

· Teaching American history to younger students:

One place to start is describing the13 British colonies as a conceptual outline. Describe the details of the boat ride to the new land and have the children do crafts of boats or draw pictures of how they imagine the boats were like inside. Tell them about how many people traveled together to make the journey. And of course, mention the Mayflower.

Use a map to show the children the path of the journey these people had to take to America. Explain how long the trip took and ask them why they think the people would want to travel and settle in a new world.

Another idea for teaching American history to younger students is to show the children what the original American flag looked like. After you have described to them briefly the 13 British colonies, they will understand the thirteen stars. Have them draw or color a picture of the original American flag to display in the classroom.
