Summer school

Summer schoolMaking the most of summer school:

Summer school can prevent a child from having to be held back a grade or from needing costly tutoring. But face it—the students in summer school want to be somewhere else. Nevertheless, for whatever reason, they are stuck in class while their friends play outside. It feels like no one else has to give up all their fun to be in school, and as soon as it is over, they will have to go right back to school again because the new school year will be starting. Thus as their teacher you have to make the class as fun as possible—to lighten the gloomy load.

In summer school there are basic academic objectives that must be accomplished before the new school year begins. So try to find as many ways to incorporate fun into the mix—while still meeting those academic objectives.

· For example: A summer school class in language arts
Say you study Shakespeare, let the children take some class time to watch the film of whatever text you are studying, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet—whatever. This will give them a visual context of the play.

· Another example for a summer school class in language arts:
Have the children study short stories and incorporate that into a creative writing unit. Have the students take a walk outside and observe their surroundings. Ask them to bring back three things that they found on their walk. If the student finds something that he or she can not bring back to the classroom—allow them to use it anyway. For example: a red car or a tree with one dead branch. Then ask the students to take the three objects and make a short story out of them. Allow them to have their peers look at the story and allow them to take it home to revise. Then the students can turn in the final draft the following day. This provides a break in the sitting and reading and listening to lectures and looking out the window that they have been doing all day, and it gives the students a chance to walk outside, think, and create.

· An example for summer school English and grammar classes:
Learning grammar is hard enough as it is. The topic seems to be neglected, to an extent. For the students, taking summer school in grammar is just as boring as summer school in any other subject—but it may be more of a challenge. One way to make grammar fun—once you have actually gone over the rules a bit and the children have a basic concept of what they are to learn for the day. Play a game with them dividing them into a number of groups and keeping points using whatever system suits your class best. A small class may only have two groups while a larger class will have three or four. Have children from each group come up to the front of the class and read a sentence. The teams are to guess if the sentence was grammatically correct or incorrect—and the class will not find out until all groups have given their answer. If the sentence was correct, ask someone to explain why it is correct—and what would be the incorrect way to say it. If the sentence was incorrect, ask them to tell you how the sentence should have been said.
