Student
teachers first starting out can have it rough. It can be hard to
be a student teacher – student teachers can sometimes feel
like they are stuck in no-man’s land. Student teachers can
sometimes be confused about just how much authority they have. Sometimes
student teachers have to work extra hard to gain the respect of
their students. Here are some tips and advice to help student teachers
who are just starting out:
• Before you teach, make sure that you observe multiple teaching
styles. Come up with a teaching style of your own that will work
for you.
• Review the curriculum.
• Help to grade papers
• Always be on time.
• Introduce yourself to your students – let them know
who you are.
• Learn as much about your students – as a whole and
as individuals – as you can
• Learn the names of all of your students!
• Be clear and concise. Tell your students exactly what you
expect of them, and tell it in terms that they will be able to follow.
• Prepare a letter to introduce yourself to parents and students
so they know exactly what your role is in the classroom and your
educational background, etc.
• Start out slowly. Make sure that every student can be successful.
• Organize yourself. Be sure to have well organized lesson
plans and notes and everything else that you need
• Involve the parents.
• Set class goals that you can work towards throughout the
term or semester (or even just daily or weekly goals). Have your
students help you come up with goals.
• Keep good records. Record student’s grades, and what
lessons you have taught, etc.
• Get to know your colleagues – get involved in school
activities and professional activities.
• Respect your students.
• Be positive
• Be patient
• Prepare a letter to introduce yourself to parents and students
so they know exactly what your role is in the classroom and your
educational background, etc.
These are only a few tips and ideas to help student teachers. If, as a student teacher, you still feel unprepared to start teaching a class, do not worry. There are many other resources and people that you can look at and talk to. Do not be afraid to be a great student teacher.
