The
issue of whether to use student
uniforms in public schools is a touchy one. Among the
questions posed when it comes to school uniforms are the following:
· Do the clothes make the student?
· Who should decide student dress codes?
· How would a school uniform policy be implemented?
· Are uniforms right for every school?
· Are uniforms coming to your school?
The Cherry Hill Elementary Experiment:
In 1987, Cherry Hill Elementary, a public school in Baltimore,
MD participated in a voluntary school uniform policy. It’s
360 students participated in an effort to cut clothing costs and
to ease the social pressure in lower income families.
Nine years later, the uniforms are still a policy at Cherry Hill.
The success is undeniable according to Principal Smallwood, “Students
are very proud of themselves in uniforms,” she says. She comments
that girls in jumpers and blouses and boys in trousers, shirts and
ties have better attitudes about school.
Still, as the nation watched Cherry Hill, not all were convinced
that the uniform policy would be right for their communities. A
survey across the nation found that parents and school officials
remain evenly divided on the issue.
Everyone agrees that the decision must be a local one, involving
parents and community as a whole, and that the implementation of
school uniforms should not come from administration.
Some communities hope to see a decrease in gang activities through
the implementation of school uniforms. Other communities do not
want a school uniform policy but agree that a strong dress code
is important.
