Before we start, make sure that you use a school
supplies checklist so you don't forget anything. You want to be sure all your teaching supplies are in hand and your classroom is all set and ready to go on that first day of school.
Teaching is like any other profession, which means that you have to have the proper tools to do your job. Your curriculum should be the starting point for the teacher supplies and teacher resources that you will need for the year. Your school should provide the basic space and budget you will need for the curriculum, but you are responsible for the rest of the classroom supplies and teaching supplies you will need. You need to be sure that your classroom is well stocked with the essential teaching supplies before the year starts. What follows is a basic teacher supplies checklist that we have used over the years. You should consider it as a starting point but add and subtract to fit your curriculum's particular needs.
Basic Checklist
Markers, both with fine points and bullet points
Plain markers and crayons (non-toxic)
Lots of pencils, both regular and colored
Both white and colored chalk, possibly with a chalk holder
Index cards, both lined and unlined. (These can be made into flash cards)
Poster board
Butcher paper either white or natural colors
Construction paper in multicolor packs
glue sticks
Scissors both child size and adult size
Rulers, 12", plastic
Hole punchers and staplers with plenty of staples
Color folders in packs of 100
Pencils and pencil sharpeners
Rolls of transparent tape and rolls of masking tape
Here are some great additions, which may even seem like essential teacher supplies for your goals for the year. Make sure they are provided before school begins, if that is the case. If you have the chance and the budget—you may also want to consider technology in the classroom (i.e., computers):
Map(s) of the world and/or a map of your home country
Cork board
Plastic storage bins
Gel pens and modeling clay
Binding machine (for making books) with plastic materials for binding
Specialty paper and clipboards
Tracing paper
Yarn
Finger paints, poster paints, and paint brushes
Glitter and other adornments
Old magazines
School supplies are very important to have at the start of the
year. You can not plan your lessons without them!
