Maps for the Classroom

Although
geography textbooks will provide maps, Maps for the classroom are
important so that the entire group of students can see a larger
and more simple to read visual aid for their lessons. The maps in
the book are good for the students to refer to at home—once
they have become accustom to reading the less challenging maps for
the classroom during school. Locations will be simpler for students
to find on a smaller map if the larger maps for the classroom have
already been provided for them to view. It really is important that
the children can read and understand the fine print and the keys
on the maps found in their textbooks.
Maps for the classroom do not have to be as expensive as one would
think. Do not imagine that these maps for the classroom have to
take up too much classroom space. Most schools have projectors that
can be used on very large screens. Thus, you will have very large
maps for the classroom projected as visual aids that will take up
little place in your desk and can be kept sorted according to lesson
plans in a simple folder. With such maps for the classroom you can
even point out more clearly to your students which areas you will
be focusing on at that particular time in the lesson by using an
erasable marker on the projection screen.
If your school has already provided you with wall mount maps for
the classroom, your lessons will be most effective with a wand or
pointing stick to point out for your students the rivers, bodies
of water, cities, countries, islands etc. that your class will be
studying that day. There are advantages to wall mounted maps for
the classroom, the only disadvantage being, as I mentioned before—the
amount of space that these maps may take up.
However, some schools and their curriculums do provide storage
space and easy access to wall mounted maps for the classroom, you
may even find them more effective to use, in a way, because paper
maps can often be more colorful than projector-run maps for the
classroom, and such colors and details can provide better visual
aid and understanding for your students.
I cannot stress enough how important maps for the classroom will
be to the success of your teaching. In fact, I cannot stress enough
how essential any visual aids will be for your classroom. There
are not only geography maps for the classroom available—but
there are also maps for the classroom that cover science and history
lessons, too. For example: maps of the moon or maps of Buckingham
Palace, or any such place that is structured in a way that the students
may not understand. How are types of houses, royal dwellings, villages
and farmlands are structured differently now that there is more
technology and there are better resources for farming, and living?
