There
are lots of ways to learn, the approach for the most effective learning
comes through the knowing yourself, your capacity to learn, processes
that have worked for you in the past, your interest in, and your
knowledge of the subject you are learning.
For example: It may be easy for you to learn physics but at the same time it seems impossible to learn Spanish, or vice versa.
Remember that requires a certain number of methods—you may
need to utilize all of them or only some learning or even only one.
These are some methods to better learning:
· Begin with the ways you have learned in the past to develop learning strategies:
Ask yourself: Do I like to read? solve problems? memorize? recite? interpret? speak in front of groups?
Ask yourself: do I know how to summarize? Do I know how to review?
Do I have access to information from a variety of sources? Do I
like quiet studying alone or study groups?
Ask yourself: Do I need several brief study sessions, or one longer
one?
Which of your past study habits have worked best in the past? How
did I best communicate what I learned—through a written test,
a term paper, an interview etc.
· Proceed to the present to decide what learning
strategies work best for you:
Ask yourself: how interested am I in this and how much time do I need to spend studying this? How can I increase my interest so that I will retain more information?
Ask yourself: what else occupies my attention and are the study circumstances right for success? If not, how can I make them so?
Many students find that repetition is the key. Flashcards have proven to be helpful for many students.
Others may try outlining the chapters of the text or taking notes in class to study from.
Another learning strategy is to go over homework with the teacher to understand the problems you missed.
Ask yourself: What can I control, and what is outside my control?
You may do much better when writing papers or taking essay tests than when taking standardized or short answer tests or vice versa. You cannot control which method of testing the teacher will use—so figure out how best to study the material in each case, which learning strategy is best. This way you will not waste time studying in a way that is less helpful to you.
