Language Arts Lesson Ideas

Language Arts Lesson IdeasThere are several aspects of the language arts that should be addressed before a student graduates from high school. These include, the importance of words, the breakdown of syllables and meter and sound elements such as iambs and trochees etc, the structure and musicality of poetry, the structure and musicality of prose, creative writing, fiction verses non-fiction, and breaking down and understanding literature.

Morphing creative writing into your language arts lesson ideas:
One idea for your language arts lesson ideas is to go through a big stack of magazines and cut out random pictures with no particular theme in mind. Use the contents of an old “junk drawer” to bring along, too. Take your big stack of pictures and random items like rubber bands and thumbtacks, to school, give each student two or three of these items and pictures and have them write a story that links the pictures and/or objects together. If they are stumped, tell them to write something about each picture separately and then to combine the writing together as best they can.

Other types of language arts lesson ideas are writing workshops. All the way through college I worked in writing workshops—but the children can begin to experiment with creative writing much, much earlier on.

One teacher told me that she uses language arts lesson ideas to teach her fourth grade class. If you start out a group this young, try to maintain open-ended topics in your language arts lesson ideas. Offer ideas for them to work with drawing from their own life experiences. First use some kind of pre-writing activity (a brainstorm, if you will, so they can get their ideas together). After that, the students will write a first draft. The first draft is edited by the teacher, but the next time you write, have the students edit their peers work. A guide sheet for editing and making constructive criticism would be helpful.

Each student will then do a second draft. When they finish, they respond to the peer edit questions with the teacher. Focusing in the younger grades on capitals and punctuation, then a final draft is attempted on the computer. When the student feels that his or her work is good enough, they take it home for a parent to proof read

Start your language arts lesson ideas of this nature with ten minutes of solid writing: everyone in the room writes without interruptions -- no talking, no going to the bathroom, no sharpening pencils, etc.

Another lesson plan related to these language arts lesson ideas is to suggest that the students do a journal assignment for homework. Take their writing home with you and take a little time to read each one. Provide some sort of comment, which includes what you really like about the piece and what can use improvement. Make sure to use words of encouragement. This gives them guidance for writing in the future.

Afterwards in your next language arts lesson, when you ask students to do a peer edit, they will imitate the comments you write. They and suggest ways the piece can be improved and are encouraging to their fellow students.
