A
heart-shaped or square-shaped box covered with colored roses:
Many classes exchange valentines on Valentines Day, this holiday
project will make the February exchange this season even more fun
for your students! The box surprisingly easy to make, will work
for both boys and for girls, as well as being very budget friendly!
Heart shaped and square shaped boxes can usually be found at your local arts and crafts store for this holiday project as well as the little roses the children will use. When you choose ribbon flowers for the boxes, use shades of whites reds and pinks for the girls and shades of whites, grays and blues for the boys. Some kids may choose to use less colors and some may choose to use more. Do not restrict your children to use “boy colors” only or “girl colors” only. If they want to mix and match colors that is great—and also very creative, the kids may even want to use just one color of ribbon roses in varying sizes.
Wire free ribbon roses can be used instead of the wired roses usually sold at arts and crafts stores. Your holiday projects should be as easy and cost-effective as possible, however. And wire free ribbon roses, if you can find them, generally cost up to five times as much as the wired roses do. No matter which you use, it does not make much difference in the end—so we recommend the wired roses for that reason. Nevertheless, wired roses can be trickier to prepare. You must be sure you take care when snipping the wires. Wired roses are also usually available in a wider variety of colors and sizes.
What you will need for this holiday project:
Newspaper
Heart or square shaped boxes
Paints and paint brushes
Scissors
4 inch wide ribbon and 1 inch wide ribbon
Low temperature glue guns
Large ribbon roses
Medium ribbon roses
Small ribbon roses (amount of roses you will need depends on the
size of the class)
Make sure to cover your students work surface with newspaper for
this holiday project.
• First: paint the boxes with at least one coat of acrylic
paint. Cover the boxes evenly. Be sure to paint the inside and outside
of the boxes, as well as the lid and under the lid.
• Second: Once the paint has dried, measure the outside of
the bottom of the box and cut a piece of 4 inch wide ribbon to the
same size, but allow a 1/2 inch extra ribbon, just to be sure to
cover the box thoroughly.
• Third: Starting at the pointed bottom of the heart, glue
the ribbon onto the box, smoothing the ribbon carefully over the
glue. Repeat this with the lid of the box, using the 1 inch ribbon.
(The heart-shaped boxes will be a little harder.) Let the glue dry.
• Fourth: Choose your roses, snip off the wire, leaving a
small bump on the underside of each rose. This will make the gluing
easier. Then and set the roses aside. Carefully glue the roses to
the top of the box, encourage your students to work quickly to make
sure the glue does not set before the roses are firmly attached.
Start on one part of the box, and fill in that whole space very
tightly before moving on to other areas of the box, and let the
box dry.
Your holiday projects must be planned with care because they will be very special to the children. If you want you can cut slits in the tops of the boxes to slip in their valentines—or you can just have them open the boxes to exchange their valentines.
