Hanukkah projects and activities· Hanukkah projects and activities: The Dreidel Game
There are four letters which appear on the four corners of a dreidel, these letters allude to the miracles of Hanukkah. The letters on the four corners of a dreidel spell are: N for Nes, which means miracle), G for Gadol which means great), H for Haya which means happened and S for Sham which means in Israel.

  • You will need:
    A dreidel.
About 20 peppermint candy drops for each student. (optional)
  • Give each student playing about 20 peppermint candy drops.
  • Each student puts one piece of candy in the middle of the table.
  • Then each person takes a turn at spinning the dreidel.
  • When only one piece of candy or no candy is left, each child adds another piece of candy to the middle.
  • When one student has all the candy, that student wins!

If you who do not want to use candy for this Hanukkah activity, we have also added a “points system” to this Hanukkah activity. You can use pieces of paper to tally how many points the children get, and whoever reaches 100 points first wins!

· Hanukkah projects and activities: Hanukkah wall decorations.

This Hanukkah project can be used for older children—as a lesson in Social Studies.

  • You will need:
    scissors
    construction paper
    uncooked pasta
    glue
    markers or crayons
    hole punch
    string or yarn

Explain to students that the dreidel is used in a game as part of the traditional Hanukkah celebrations. The dreidel is basically a top with four Hebrew letters on it. Players spin the top and win or lose candy, depending on which Hebrew letter is facing up when the dreidel falls down. The students are going to make hangings with dreidels to celebrate Hanukkah.

  • Have students cut out the dreidel and glue it in the middle of a piece of construction paper.
  • Have students fill in the dreidel shape with glue.
  • Have the students put the pasta on the glue.
  • Then have students write “Happy Hanukkah” below the dreidel.
  • When the glue dries, punch a hole at the top of each decoration. Have students thread yarn or string through the hole to make a loop for hanging.

If you like, you can color the pasta before students make their wall decorations. Add food coloring and two tablespoons of vinegar to a cup of water to make the dye. Soak the pasta for about half an hour. Let it dry overnight on newspaper covered with wax paper. The children can get involved in this, too! Just dye the pasta the day before you do this part of your Hanukkah projects and activities.
