Materials:
• washable tempera paint
• paintbrushes
• containers for water
• water
• sponges cut-out into halloween shapes
• (i.e. cat, pumpkin, witch, moon, bat, monster, etc.)
• construction paper
• glue
• cookie tray
• writing paper
• pencils
• scissors
Lesson Plan:
You will need a cookie sheet for paint and some old sponges cut
out to be the Halloween shapes appropriate for your sponge painting.
This activity is adaptable for any grade level, as long supervision
is provided and lots of creativity!
Take the sponges and dip them in washable paint to be printed on
a window surface. Make sure not to coat the sponge too much, the
paint will drip and smear if too much paint is used.
While the window is drying, the students can take construction
paper and cut out pumpkins.
With writing paper, the students can write poetry to be glued on
to the pumpkins.
An example of a particular type of poem is included below:
October
Cool, fall weather, leaves falling
Goblins, Ghosts, and Ghouls
People go trick or treating in October.
Black cats, pumpkins, roasted seeds
I like October.
Autumn
This lesson is great for the students in that it provides artistic
expression into the classroom and it also contains a writing assignment.
For extra excitement, bring in spooky music to set the mood for
the activity and bring in some roasted pumpkin seeds to close the
lesson.
