Here
are some great ideas for flag
day projects:
· T-shirts
One of the most popular flag day projects is the flag t-shirt. They
are relatively easy for the students to make—this flag day
project is more suitable for the older kids—but if they have
enough one-on-one attention, this flag day project is fine for the
younger age groups as well.
You will need:
Plain white t-shirts
Red, white and blue puffy paints or paint pens
A drop cloth or table cover
Large pieces of cardboard
A dark outline of the flag with stripes and stars on a white piece
of paper and make copies for all of the children.
If the children want to draw the flag with their paint pens or
puffy paints on their own that is just fine, but many of them will
want to trace it. Then follow these steps:
*Place the table cover or drop cloth on the surface you will be
using.
*Place the flag outline inside the t shirt so that it shows through.
*Have the children trace the flag with a pencil first.
*Then have the children place their piece of cardboard inside the
shirt.
*Now the children can decorate their flags.
Remember, if the kids want to get inventive—let them. Maybe
they want to put a little flag on the sleeve or write their name
on the t-shirt etc. Let them be creative, that is part of what the
flag day project is for! One can also have the class decorate hats—like
white baseball caps, or old jeans, just for some more examples.
· Flag day cake
You will need:
A plain, undecorated cake from the bakery, covered in white icing.
Icing in red, blue and more white
A drop cloth or table cover
This is a flag day project designed for fewer students. Let them
work together to make the cake look like a flag. Then you can have
the cake for a snack.
· Making flags
You will need:
Chopsticks
Uncolored pictures of the American flag
Scissors
Tape
*Have the children color their flags.
*Then have the children cut the flags out with their scissors, leaving
a little extra along the left edge
* Then have the children tape their flags onto a chopstick
