Education
associations are designed for teachers who have to
be creative and resourceful—who often have to make ‘something
out of nothing’ so to speak—and even more often, dig
into their pockets a little to help improve the quality of education
their students receive.
· Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative
The U.S. Department of Education again claims to honor outstanding
classroom teachers through the American Stars of Teaching program.
Education associations such as the Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative
seeks nominations and information about teachers improving student
achievement, using innovative strategies in the classroom, and making
a difference in the lives of their students. Teachers across all
grade levels and disciplines will be honored in the fall of 2006.
Parents, students, colleagues, school administrators, etc. can nominate
an exemplary teacher who they believe has the qualities to be an
American Star of Teaching Education association. One teacher will
be recognized from each state. All nominations must be completed
by April 15th. To nominate a teacher or learn more about the American
Star of Teaching Education association, please visit the American
Stars of Teaching page.
· Teacher-to-Teacher workshops
There is a saying I learned in college “you teach by learning
and you learn by teaching. Thus, I believe that some of the great
assets of education associations are Teacher-to-Teacher workshops.
In this forum, teachers can learn from one another about what has
worked for them in the classroom and what has not. They can discuss
as part of this education association new methods that may improve
upon old approaches to teaching. We are all learning—especially
with the continuous rise of technology, that significant improvements
in the classroom can be made.
· Summer Workshops
As one element of education associations improving on the condition
of education in this country, soon there will be an announcement
of free summer 2006 workshops for K-12 teachers and principals.
There will be some of the most respectable American teachers and
principals there to share their strategies for improving student
achievement and making sure that teachers are informed of the latest,
most successful practices. Education associations have made information
about the 2005 workshops and presentations from the 2004 workshops
available for you to see.
· Teacher Updates
You can sign up for electronic updates from education associations.
· Toolkit for Teachers
Find out how No Child Left Behind supports teachers. In all honesty,
if you are a teacher and you do not know how the No Child Left Behind
educational program benefits teachers—then the program obviously
needs a bit more work. It is a great idea, but a little underdone—not
quite ready to take out of the oven.
· Congress Rejecting Proposed Education Cuts
The recent budget proposed by the Bush administration would eliminate
more than $2.1 billion for education. NEA president Reg Weaver told
the press that, "While disappointing, this budget proposal
is just a starting point for the budget process, not the finished
product. Congress has the responsibility to draft a smart budget."
How unfortunate, though, that our own president pushes for eliminating
$2.1 BILLION. No child left behind?—well maybe what he meant
was that no rich, private college prep school attending, college
bound child would be left behind. In the hopes that there really
will be No Child Left Behind in the future, most education associations
are doing all they can.
