With
the way the economy works in America today, that being that a middle-class
household must bring in a dual income to survive, children, even
at their earliest most needy stages are separated from their parents
and placed in a system that makes them susceptible to many types
of diseases.
Some people believe that this is actually a good thing—because
a childs immune system will develop a resistance to certain illnesses
earlier on in life rather than later on, when it could be much worse.
Like it is with chicken pox—you want your child to get them
when he or she is still a child because the disease is much, much
worse as an adult.
However, with mothers having to leave their babies in day care
institutions as early as a month or two after giving birth, the
situation is downright terrifying. Let us face the reality that
to an extent, in any day care, institutionalism is dangerous. Unfortunately,
daycare is just the beginning...
Day care often provides a focal point for certain kinds of infectious
diseases that can all too easily spread not only to others in the
day-care center, but far and wide into the community.
One study reported in the September 1988 journal of Pediatrics
found that day care children under three years of age had gotten
diarrhea twice as often as children remaining at home.
Fecal contamination can be a prime source of disease in day care
centers that care for children under the age of three. Hands, toys
diaper-changing areas, and just about everything else in the day
care center can quickly become contaminated with fecal matter. Both
children and adults who touch these contaminated objects are prime
candidates for disease. Especially when children in day care then
put their fingers to their mouths—which, as you know if you
are a parent or have ever worked with children, is a common thing.
They stick everything in their mouths.
Diarrhea is not the only consequence of fecal contamination in
day care centers, but it is an extremely important one. The fact
is, diarrhea that persists for a week or more can lead to nutrient
loss, which can compromise the immune system. In addition, a certain
form of arthritis and particular neuromuscular disorders are associated
with the bacteria that cause diarrhea.
What is worse: some of the strains of pathogens that cause outbreaks
of diarrheal disease are resistant to commonly used disinfectants.
Another good question concerning day care is: who is watching our
children? Are they safe?
Day care is a complex issue, there are no easy solutions. Here is
the bottom line: In many professional opinions, the standards for
American day care generally make it a poor replacement (often a
dangerous replacement) - for parenting at home. Like it or not,
the standards and requirements of day care in most states are astonishingly
poor.
