Often
times, students will feel overwhelmed by the seemingly daunting
task of writing a book report. But part of a teacher’s responsibility
is to not only teach the importance of the book report content,
but also to teach students how to break down a large project into
small, doable parts.
This lesson will help the student far more and for far longer than
the actual content of the book report itself. When students move
on to college and perhaps even graduate school, their papers will
take on page requirements and proportions that may seem impossible
to them upon first glance, but with training early on in their learning
careers, your students will be able to face large writing projects
with confidence.
Examine this fun, lighthearted book
report idea and notice the way the book report project
is broken down into small, self contained parts that when brought
together form the whole book report.
Draw various components of a sandwich on plain paper, then photocopy
these onto appropriately colored paper. Example: ham on pink, tomato
on red, cheese on yellow, bread on white, etc. These sheets will
serve as the students’ book report “sandwiches.”
· On the top slice of bread, have each student write the
title and the author of the book.
· On the lettuce slice, have the student write a brief summary
of the book.
· On the pickle and tomato slices, have the student write
about the main character/s.
· On the mayo or mustard, have the student describe the book’s
setting.
· On the cheese, have the student describe the book’s
climax.
· On the ham slice, have the student describe the plot.
· On the bottom piece of bread, have the student describe
their favorite scene from the story.
