Presidents
Day (also referred to as Washington's Birthday) is celebrated on
the third Monday of February. George Washington's actual birthday,
but the date was changed in 1971 for the purpose of creating a consistent
time of the year for this national holiday.
The following are a couple of great class activities
for President's Day:
· Timeline:
Have the students create an artistic timeline listing the US presidents
in order—have them practice reading them aloud and explain
some of the duties and responsibilities of the president.
· Pinwheels:
(Because this Presidents Day activity uses a push-pin, it is not
suitable for younger children.)
For this Presidents Day activity you will need: 2 pieces of construction
paper (as thick as possible), scissors, a hole puncher, a push-pin,
a pencil with an eraser, and markers or crayons
1) Make two square pieces of paper by putting the two pieces of
paper together.
To do this, fold the corners so you have two large triangles, making
a square.
Then cut off the small rectangles at the top of the papers, forming
two squares (which are already folded into a triangle).
2) Fold the triangles in half again, and then unfold the paper.
3) Have the children decorate one side of each sheet of paper.
4) Put the undecorated sides of the paper together.
5) Make four cuts along the fold lines - about halfway to the center.
6) Punch four holes in the pinwheel, one at each corner.
7) Gently gather each of the four points (with a hole) at the center.
(Be careful not to crease the paper.)
8) Push a push-pin through the four punched holes through the center
of the pinwheel to attach the pinwheel to the side of a pencil's
eraser.
· Patriotic Wind Sock activity for President's Day:
Supplies: a cylindrical cardboard oatmeal box, blue and white construction
paper, red and white crepe paper streamers, glue, string, scissors,
and a hole punch
1) Cut the bottom off a cylindrical cardboard oatmeal box.
2) Cover the box with blue construction paper and then glue on white
construction paper stars.
3) Cut some red and white crepe paper streamers and glue or staple
them to one end of the wind sock.
4) Have the children punch four holes along the top of the wind
sock.
5) Next, cut two pieces of string about a foot long.
6) The children will tie the strings to the wind sock (tie the opposite
ends of a string to holes on opposite sides of the cylinder).
7) Then the children will tie a longer piece of string to the smaller
pieces – you will hang the wind sock from this longer piece
of string.
8) You can hang your patriotic wind sock from your windows in the
classroom, or the children can hang them from their own window or
porch at home.
Whatever the activity, it is good to make sure that the children
acknowledge President’s Day—by doing at least one of
these activities for President's Day—or a similar activity.
