Prior to 1971 the birth days of Presidents Lincoln (February 12th) and Washington (February 22nd) were celebrated independently. The schools were closed and many businesses were also closed. President Washington’s birthday was also a national holiday and all of the government offices were closed for it. There were two problems with this. First both of their birthdays were in February and that made a lot of holidays in a short month. Second, a lot of people wanted to have more Presidents honored by having their birthdays off as well. The problem was solved by creating President’s Day, which is a national holiday that is celebrated every year on the third Monday of February.
As a teacher or home school parent, there are many ways that you can bring this activity into your classroom. This is true no matter if you are dealing with young minds or high school students. Either way, it is essential that your students are well aware of the importance of Presidents Day.
Here are some of the most common Presidents Day activities:
Timeline
Have students create a time line depicting the United States presidents in order. Along with this, have them read aloud and explain some of the major accomplishments of each one.
You may want to assign a different president to each student, allowing him or her to really dive into the research process.
Pinwheels
This is one of those Presidents Day activities that can be both fun and educational. Although it is not always best for young students (because push-pins are used) many teachers find that it to be a perfect solution.
For this activity, you will need the following school supplies: push-pin, two pieces of construction paper, a hole puncher, scissors, markers or crayons, and a pencil. Most teachers already have these abailable as teacher supplies, so you won’t need to go out and purchase them.
1. Put the two pieces of construction paper together to make two square pieces. You can do this by folding the corners to make two large triangles.
2. Fold the triangles in half again and then unfold.
3. Have your students decorate one side of each sheet.
4. Place the undecorated sides of each piece of paper together.
5. Make four cuts alone the fold lines – only go halfway to the middle.
6. Punch a hole (four total) at the corner of the pinwheel.
7. Gather each of the four points at the center.
8. Push your pin through the four holes through the center of the pinwheel. This will attach the pinwheel to the side of the pencil’s eraser.
Patriotic Wind Sock
To complete this project, you will need the following teaching supplies: a cylindrical cardboard oatmeal box, red and white crepe paper streamers, blue and white construction paper, a hole punch, scissors, string, and glue. Again, most educators will already have these available as classroom supplies.
1. Start by cutting off the bottom of a cylindrical cardboard oatmeal box.
2. Cover the box with blue construction paper.
3. Use the white paper to make stars; glue these onto the box.
4. Cut red and white crepe paper streamers and add them to one side of the wind sock.
5. Allow your students to punch four holes into the top.
6. Cut two pieces of string, approximately one foot in length each.
7. Tie the strings to the wind sock. Tie the other side of the string to the opposite holes.
8. Tie a longer piece of string to the smaller pieces. This is what your wind sock will hang from.
9. Find a suitable place for hanging. This can be anywhere from a classroom window to outside.
Regardless of the activity, make sure your students acknowledge President's Day and realize its importance.
