Especially with younger students classroom manipulatives can be essential to their understanding of certain lessons. Classroom manipulatives are very effective for teaching early math and science skills, and some classroom manipulatives can be used in the higher grades as well.

For example: Once, when I was a student in the third grade we were learning about division. My teacher brought in classroom manipulatives to help us with division. One of which was a watermelon. We divided the watermelon into several pieces—keeping track of what percent of the watermelon each section was.

This one is a fourth of the watermelon, cut it in half and you have one eighth of a watermelon etc. This classroom manipulative really helped the class understand the basics of division.
