The Civil War was the bloodiest war that we have ever fought in terms of the number of men that were killed relative to the population of our country.  It pitted brother against brother and neighbor against neighbor in an epic struggle.  Although most people think it was about slavery, the freeing of the slaves was really an after-thought that occurred late in the war.  The war was really about the role of the Federal government vs that of the states.  In many respects that war is continuing today, with epic struggles going on about states rights and the power of the Federal government.
