Basketball was started by Dr James Naismith in 1891 as a way to provide fun, excitement, and exercise for his students during the long winter months in New England. The reason it was called basketball is that the first "hoop" was really a peach basket with the bottom still in it. The ball had to be manually retrieved after each basket. Peach baskets (without the bottoms) were used until 1906 when they were replaced with metal hoops with backboards. The first official game was played in 1892 and ended with a score of 1 - 0.
Since its early beginnings, basketball has grown to be one of the most popular sports around the country. It is one of those sports that kids of all ages, male and female, love to play. At Homeroom Teacher, we have a great selection of high quality basketballs for indoor basketball and outdoor basketball. Our basketballs are perfect for recess, PE, games, or just shooting hoops at home.
Homeroom Teacher has a tremendous selection of sports equipment and supplies, of which basketball is just one part. No matter what sport you are interested in, please see what we have and don't hesitate to ask if you can't find what you are looking for!
