Not so many years ago, everyone was taught to be right-handed, even if they were naturally left-handed.  It was thought that there was something wrong with left-handed people because they didn’t do things the “right” way.  Penmanship was taught right-handed and all tools were made only for right-handed people.

Things have come a long way since then.  Now it is recognized that some portion of our population is left-handed and it is natural for them to do things differently.  In some areas such as baseball, being left-handed is even considered a benefit.  To go along with that thinking, tools are now made for both right-handed and left-handed people, although it is often difficult to find certain tools for “lefties”.

The thinking in schools has evolved along with the thinking of the rest of the world.  School supplies used to be exclusively for right-handed people.  Now, for example, there are scissors made specifically for right or left handed people.  But the most popular scissors in our schools today are ambidextrous scissors.   These scissors favor neither right nor left handed children and they allow either type student to cut cleanly and easily without any difficulty. The best thing about ambidextrous scissors is that you can have a pair for each child in your class and you don’t have to worry about which hand they are using to cut.  The fact is that it takes a long time for a child to decide which hand is going to be the dominant hand.  Therefore, even children who will ultimately be right handed will frequently use their left hand to cut, particularly in the early grades.
