Math can be a very difficult subject for a lot of young students, whether they are in a traditional class or in a home school environment.  The difficulty probably arises because math is the first abstract thinking they are being asked to do.  If you don’t somehow make the connection between the concrete and the abstract, your students can be lost for a long time.  This is why it is important to consider the use of addition manipulatives as part of your teaching supplies.  The use of manipulatives makes it easier to see what you are talking about when you use mathematical concepts.
